Believe: Cardiac Cats Avoid Disaster, Win NFC South

Just what in the hell is wrong with Carolina's once sound defensive unit?

This team didn't earn the nickname "Cardiac Cats" for no reason in 2003, and they've earned that nickname once again. Leading by 20 points twice throughout the game (23-3 and 30-10) the Carolina Panthers did their very best to lose this game, giving Drew Brees and Co. more than enough chances to pull off the upset. With nothing but pride (and a certain passing record) to play for, the Saints nearly threw the Panthers Super Bowl aspirations right down the toilet. Let's face it, the Panthers (who finish the season 8-0 at home and a mediocre 4-4 on the road) would not have won 3 consecutive road games in the Playoffs. They've just been way too inconsistent away from Mint St. However, they did themselves a huge favor by coming back and slamming the door on New Orleans' 9-7 aspirations. The Panthers also became the first NFC South team to win on the road within the division.

What more can you say about Carolina's offense. Often the joke of the league in 2006 and 2007 (averaging a pedestrian 16 a game those 2 years) the Panthers have become an offensive force the last 7 games of the year, scoring 224 points throughout that span (an average of 32 points per). To put this in perspective, the Panthers scored just 270 points in 2006, and only 267 in 07.

When was the last time you could say that, scoring wise, the Panthers are among the elite offenses in the NFL? Probably never. Jake Delhomme, despite being the most criticized player on the roster, was once again clutch. Leading the Panthers down the field in the final minutes, giving him his 19th career game winning, come from behind drive. Say what you want about his "slinging" the rock around with almost reckless abandon. There are few QBs as clutch as this guy when everything is on the line.

And, how about our boy DeAngelo Williams? His 178 yards rushing today gave him 1,515 rushing yards for 2008, surpassing Stephen Davis for most rushing yards in a season in franchise history, and proved once again why the Pro Bowl is nothing but a popularity contest. He's, for my money, the best RB in 2008 and I'll debate anybody all day on this.

But, as I opened up this thing, where in the hell was the defense in the 4th. They held the Saints vaunted offense to 10 points going into the final 15, then give up 21, nearly rendering the Panthers big day offesively meaningless (thank God we've got Capt. Clutch himself behind Center!). Look, I realize that the Saints have been the best offense in the league from a statistical standpoint, but these blown leads by the defense is concerning heading into the Playoffs. However, this bye week could do wonders as it gives Ma'ake Kemoeatu and Damione Lewis time to heal up.

So, where will this journey end for the Panthers? They've proven that they can run over and score points against anybody (including the NY Giants tough defense). The Panthers will score enough points in the Postseason to win the Super Bowl, they've just got so many ways to move the ball downfield. The problem with the Panthers, and I almost can't believe I'm saying this about a John Fox coached team, is the defense. Will they be able to make the key stops and hold onto the leads that the Panthers offense will build? If they can, I can safely say that the Panthers will be Super Bowl champs. With the way that the D has been playing, though, that's a huge "if".

No Time for Sulking, Panthers Must Win Today

The Panthers suffered one of their toughest loses in recent memory, losing to the New York Giants 34-28 in an OT thriller this past Sunday. In a game which the Panthers blew a 21-10 lead, then had a John Kasay 50 yarder at the end of regulation get pushed by the gust from Hell, then a muffed Giants punt that was just barely missed by Richard Marshall, then an 84 yard run by Derrick Ward to set up the game winning touchdown. To say this was a tough, demoralizing loss is to put it mildly.

However, the Panthers need to get their shizz together today as the travel to New Orleans to face the 8-7 Saints. The Saints, minus Reggie Bush, will have plenty of incentive to knock off the Panthers, so they will be no pushovers. Not only can they screw over the Panthers, but they would also have a winning season at 9-7 with the win. Not to mention that Drew Brees is like 400 something yards away from Dan Marino's single season passing yards record. Though unlikely, the Saints will probably be launching the ball down the field all game long and if Brees gets hot, it's going to be trouble for the Panthers because number 9 has been dominant at home this year. Oh yeah, and no NFC South team has won a game on the road against each other this year.

That trend will end today, my friends. Why? Because the Panthers have been unstoppable on offense for the most part over the past several weeks. They've scored at least 28 points in every game since their 17-6 win over the Raiders. DeAngelo Williams has been a straight beast, and has been the best running back in the league since the midway point this season. One of the things that goes unsaid about Mr. Williams is that he hasn't fumbled this season. Not once. With guys like Adrian Peterson fumbling the ball like it's his job, D-Will has protected the rock like it's his baby. Not to mention that he's scored 4 touchdowns in 2 of the last 4 games and leads the league in that all important category with 20 overall touchdowns (18 rushing, 2 receiving). Add Jonathan Stewart and, of course, Steve Smith to the mix and the Panthers should make mince meat out of New Orleans' soft defense.

Get Ready for the Snubs

The NFL will announce the Pro Bowl selections in about an hour on NFL Network. Now, I could really care less about the Pro Bowl because I feel that it's too big a risk for a serious injury. I'll never forget the highly overrated Roy Williams' cheap shot on Marvin Harrison (I think it was Marvin, anyway) a couple of years ago, which is why dirty players like him shouldn't been in the Pro Bowl (thank the Lord Williams isn't in the Pro Bowl this year).

However, on the other hand, I like to see my Panthers get some respect and make it to the All-Star Exhibition. But, unfortunately, the Pro Bowl vote is placed too highly on the fan voting. It's nice to reward fans for buying tickets, increasing ratings, buying jerseys and other memorabilia. But, fans, for the most part, are just biased and want to see their favorites in the game. Again, it's honorable for the NFL to this for their fans, but when the Washington Redskins who have tanked late in the year have the most players voted in with the fan vote, you realize that it's a bunch of bull.

Take DeAngelo Williams for example. He's been a scoring machine this year, leading the NFL in total touchdowns and as been a key part of Carolina's 11-3 run so far this year. He'll likely get snubbed for Clinton Portis. Williams is averaging a ridiculous 5.5 yards per carry on his way to 1229 yards, 14 rushing TDs, and even added 2 more through the air to give him 16 total TDs on the year. Let's compare that to Clinton Portis, who's a Redskin and subject to the unreal Washington voter turnout. He's had a pretty good year, truth be told. But, he has less than half the TDs (7) that Williams has and the only real advantage for him is yards (1337), but you don't win football games on yards, you win by scoring which Williams has significantly scored more than Portis. He's also averaging a whole yard less than Williams per carry (4.6). If Williams isn't in the Pro Bowl alongside Adrian Peterson and Michael Turner...something is seriously wrong.

About the only 2 locks for the Panthers (and they could still miss out) are WR Steve Smith and DE Julius Peppers. Smith, despite missing the first 2 games, has over 1200 receiving yards, but he hasn't found the endzone that much this year (6). But, Smith has been instrumental in setting up short yardage TDs for Williams and Stewart, just see the Green Bay game again to know what I mean. Peppers is having a bounce back year and has been a tear with 12.5 sacks and and 5 forced fumbles.

Some players that will get snubbed for sure later on today are as follows: MLB Jon Beason, the heart and soul of the defense and among the league leaders with 122 tackles and has added 3 INTs as well. CB Chris Gamble, who has been a shut down corner this year despite the Panthers giving up big yards in the passing game of late. He's had several dropped INTs, so he'd be a lock if he could hold on to the ball more (which is surprising, as he played WR a lot in college). I also think that John Kasay will get snubbed, his only miss this year was a 54 yard attempt.

So, there you have it. It's entirely possible that the 11-3 Carolina Panthers could have as few as 1 or not send anybody to the Pro Bowl all together. Let's hope that the Players and Coaches can help the Panthers along and next year, let's hope that the Redskins homers aren't anywhere near computers!

Panthers Dominant, In Control of their Own Destiny

So, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have an untouchable defense, right? So, the Panthers are "not legit", right? The Panthers proved all the talking heads wrong, dominanting the unstoppable Bucs (if you listen to the media). This was a huge game, that had a huge game atmosphere to it. Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams were dominant, rushing for a combined 300 yards and 4 TDs. I can't remember the last time I saw a 4 play, 90 yard drive which consisted of 4 runs like I saw tonight. Remember that Washington Pre-Season game? This was much like that.

Steve Smith was also dominant, catching all 9 passes thrown his way for 117 yards and a TD. Delhomme had a mediocre performance, but the 2 picks he threw were the result of outstanding plays by Barber and Phillips, so you have to give credit where credit is due. The first pick probably shouldn't have been thrown, Barber just made a great break on the ball. The 2nd pick, just an outstanding effort by Phillips. So, it's hard to harp too badly on Jake, though a lot of Carolina fans and media folks will. Calling Delhomme the weakest link on this team is ludicrous. Please tell me the Panthers are 10-3 with Josh McCown under center. Delhomme is the undisputed leader of this team, which makes up for his lacking in superior talent.

The Defense was hit or miss tonight, with the secondary once again getting lit up for a few big plays. However, that long TD by Antonio Bryant was the result of Bryant stiff arming Lucas to the ground, yet somehow Lucas getting called for the penalty. B.S.! Our pass rush did something that they haven't done against Garcia, they put a licking on him to the tune of 5 sacks. Also, our run defense was stellar tonight, holding the Caddy and Dunn in check. Also, that goal line stand in the 1st quarter was huge.

All in all, an impressive performance by boys tonight. It doesn't get much better than that. Has anyone else noticed that the Panthers have scored 132 points in their last 4 games? That's 33 points per game. The Defense carried the Panthers the first half of the year, and now the offense is returning the favor. If the Defense can get back to their dominant ways, and the offense keeps putting up points...watch out! The Panthers should now be on everybody's radar, and it's up to the Panthers to live up the hype they'll receive. With their destiny fully in their hands, the Panthers have a chance to go 13-3 and control home field advantage. It won't be easy, as the Broncos and Giants are playoff teams (and the Saints always tough at home) but the Panthers don't have to sit back and hope other teams lose.

As a side note: In my Fantasy Football keeper league, I was down 76-25 in the 1st round of the playoffs going into tonight's game. But DeAngelo Williams, Steve Smith, Jon Beason, and the Carolina Defense/Special Teams carried me to a 78-76 win!

Cardiac Cats Do It Again

Here we go again! That's what I was thinking as the score of the Panthers game read 28-21 in favor of the Packers, which made working today all the more tough. The Panthers had built a 21-10 lead going into the break and I was feeling pretty good about it. But, then the Panthers defense (which has been the case since the bye, for the most part) couldn't stop a JV squad as Aaron Rodgers just picked apart the Panthers secondary. In total, "A-Rod" (c'mon Packers fans....) threw for just under 300 yards and 3 scores. What has happened to the Panthers once dominant defense?

But, Jake Delhomme and Steve Smith would not go away, as the two hooked up for essentially identical plays, setting up 2 of D-Will's 4 rushing TDs to give the Panthers the 35-31 critical victory. The 2nd of Delhomme's long completions to Smitty was one of the most athletic, sheer will catches I have seen in a long time. He actually caught the back of the football. How he held on to it, I don't know.

Boy, oh, boy. Nothing comes easy for these crazy Cardiac Cats.

So, now the Panthers stand at 9-3 with a reeling defense that has given up, get this, over 90 points their last 3 games. Are you kidding me? But, the Panthers have also been scoring a ton of points of late themselves, and they've gone 2-1 during this stretch of invisible defense. Can we really feel good about that?

The Panthers will look for some get back next Monday night, as the Tamba Bay Succaneers (...I mean, Buccaneers...) at home, where the good guys are 6-0 this season. We all remember what happened to the Cats last time they played the Sucs, they got their asses thoroughly kicked back to Carolina. Can they rebound. Sources say: yes.

"Smash and Dash" Getting it Done, Panthers Standing Strong at 8-2

Guess which team NOBODY is talking about right now? They are 8-2, 3rd best team in the NFL. They've blown out several teams and have found ways to win when they are not playing their best. Still don't know? Not many do, but it's the Carolina Panthers who have quietly become one of the league's best teams after a disappointing 7-9 campaign last year. I'm sure the Panthers are fine with that. With everybody talking about the Titans and Giants (deservedly) and the NFC East (overrated) the Panthers are sitting right below the radar.

Following a disappointingly ugly win on the road against the Raiders last week (Jake, seriously?), Carolina found themselves down 10-0 early against the hapless Lions....that was until the Panthers figured out the Lions couldn't stop a JV team's running game. I mean, seriously, Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams are talented backs, but I don't see how you give up 250 yards and 3 TDs on the ground. Oh, and it took just 30 carries to do that! It reminded me of that absolute beatdown the Panthers handed the Redskins in the preseason. Oh, and let's not forget about Julius Peppers, who is playing like a man amongst children as he had 2 more sacks and 2 more forced fumbles. Let's hope he stays hot.

The Panthers, though, played down the Lions allowed them to stay in the game most of the way. Jake Delhomme was victimized by some dropped passes, as he threw for under 100 yards 2 games in row, challenging David Carr. But, when you gain 264 yards on the ground, you don't need to pass. Still, it would be nice to see the Steve Smith/Jake Delhomme connection get rolling again, especially with the nearly brutal schedule coming up for the Panthers.

Next week, the Panthers can all but knock the 6-4 Falcons out of the NFC South/Wildcard race with a victory this weekend. Should the Panthers win, they will have essentially a 4 game lead on the Dirty Birds (3 official plus the tiebreaker). Maybe then, the media will stop talking about Matt Ryan and the Falcons (who get more love than the Panthers, who soundly beat Atlanta 24-9 already...) It should be a tough, interesting game.

My Pick: Panthers 24, Falcons 13

Panthers On Track, 6-2 Going into Bye

Wow, it has been a while. Work has been terrible, so I really haven't felt like writing or anything when I am not there. I just want to chill and not do much of anything. It's amazing how an NFL team can get you through what whatever you are going through. For me, right now, the Panthers success has kept me going. Maybe that's a bad thing, a sign of where I'm at in life right now (still single, not sure what I'm going to do to support myself after this year, etc.) But the Panthers have been giving me something to look forward to and something to be hyped about right now.

Anyway, enough about me, let's talk about the Panthers. This has been a season of ups and downs already. This team has truly become "Cardiac Cats II" and this past come from behind win over Arizona continues the trend. The Panthers came back from the dead, down 17-3 early in the 3rd, to win it 27-23. DeAngelo Williams and Steve Smith gave us 2 incredible touchdowns and unsung heroes Kemoeatu and Charles Godfrey made game changing/saving plays. In the end, Carolina came out on top, giving us another thrilling finish. This team is much different from that team in that the Panthers have had some blowout victories along with their last second, come from behind wins that are reminiscent of that magical 2003 season. I think this team is a bit better in comparison, though both teams have their strengths and weaknesses.

This year also marked the 1st time that I made the trek from the butthole of Ohio (Cincinnati) to Charlotte to see my boys play. The game I went to was the 34-0 beatdown of the Kansas City Chiefs. It was a great experience and I should have posted a blog about it, but I just was so beat when I got back and I had a great time. I wish I lived in Charlotte (or anywhere other than Cincy, to be honest) so I could go to more games.

Anyway, that's all I got. It's going to be easier to get through this bye week thanks to the win. If they had lost, it would be an agonizing wait for the Oakland game. See you in 2 weeks!

Panthers Lose Ugly, Despite Return of Smitty

Despite the return of Steve Smith, who finished with 70 yards on 4 catches, the Panthers (2-1) lose a tough one to the desperate Vikings (1-2) on the road. It was an ugly game all around, but it didn't start out that way. Carolina jumped on Minnesota early as they built a 10-0 2nd Quarter lead. But, a Jake Delhomme fumble (1 of 3 on the day) Antoine Winfield took it the distance and tied the game at 10 going into the locker room, giving Minnesota all the momentum they would need. The Panthers defense was solid all game long..except for the 3rd quarter. After giving up a quick TD to start the half, giving Minny a 17-10 lead, the Vikings absolutely wore out the defense on 19 play, 12 minute drive which only ended in a FG, but gave the Vikings Defense a huge rest. The Panthers were simply not able tomove the ball against the fresh, pass rushing defense of Minnesota. Equally disturbing were all of the penalties on Carolina. False starts, holdings, you name it, the Panthers offense did it.

Now, it's no time to panic. The Panthers are still in a 3 way tie for 1st with Tampa Bay and Atlanta. But, it's clear that the Panthers have a lot of work to do. It doesn't get any easier as the upstart Falcons come to town this week. The Falcons, laughing stocks last year, are now 2-1 so far. After facing LT and Adrian Peterson, the Panthers now get to face off against Michael Turner, who is off to a hot start. It will be a tough test in an early divisional game, to be sure.

Smitty's Back, Which Can't Be Good for Minnesota

The Panthers, who are off to an unbelievable 2-0 start w/out Smith, will look for a 3-0 start as they face the reeling 0-2 Vikings. The Vikings are so desperate at the QB spot that they benched the young, struggling Tavaris Jackson for Gus Ferrote. Frerotte, who started 3 games last year for St. Louis, is a dinosaur. I remember him playing for the Redskins when I was 12 (I'm 24 now). So, needless to say, I'm not too worried about their passing attack. What worries me is Adrian Peterson, who has emerged as one of the best backs in the NFL. The Panthers were able to hold Ladainian Tomlinson and Matt Forte to less than 100 yards, but with the outstanding offensive line that Minnesota has and the talent of Peterson, I can't see the Panthers having similar success against Peterson. However, if the Panthers can not allow the big game changing run, they should be alright, because unless Frerotte has some hidden talent left in the tank, they won't be able to move the ball effectively through the air.

On offense, the Panthers get their best playmaker back in Steve Smith. Without Smith, the Panthers scored 46 points the first 2 games, a clip of 23 per game. Just imagine what this offense can do with Smith. Smith will have the usual chip on his shoulder, to prove everybody wrong and to go out and dominate. Smith has also had very good success against Minnesota. In his rookie year, he scored a touchdown on the opening kickoff of the 2001 season, the very first time he ever touched an NFL football. Then, at the expense of trash talking party boater Fred Smoot, had a career game with over 200 yards recieving. Also, the emergence of Jonathan Stewart, the change of pace ability of DeAngelo Williams, and the veteran presense of Moose, I like this offense and think it will only get better.

Look out Minnesota. Adrian Peterson will keep you in the game for a while, but Carolina is just too much. They are full of confidence, you are full of desperation, and the Panthers will prevail. I was only 1 point off last week (had Carolina winning 20-16) so let's see how close I am this week.

This Is Why I Love the 2008 Panthers

In case you can't read it, that sign being held by SS Chris Harris reads "Steve Smith That Was 4 U!" I have always loved my Panthers, but the way that this year has played out so far, this team has really grown on me and gained my affection. The way they have responded to the "Steve Smith Incident" has been great. They have grown as a football team and they are playing together. Right before the last play defensive play, in which the Panthers stuffed the Bears on a 4th and 1, MLB Jon Beason yelled: "Look into my eyes! I'm going to give it my all for you, do it for me!" This team is about as selfless as they come, and they are only going to be more dangerous once Steve Smith returns. They may not be the most glamorious or talented team in the NFC (that would be Tony Romeo, 2, and the rest of of the Cowboys), but you'd be hard pressed to find a team with more heart, character, and a true "team first" attitude. This is going to be a dangerous team come January if they stay realtively healthy.

Cardiac Cats Strike Again, Start 2-0 W/Out Smith

The Carolina Panthers are 2-0. Let me say that again, because even I, a never say die fan, still am having a hard time believeing it: The Panthers are now 2-0. When word first got out of training camp that Smith had punched a teammate, that got himself suspended for the 1st two games this season, I was hoping for at the very best a 1-1 start, but feared another slow 0-2. But, the Panthers have proven me, and everyone else in America, wrong by starting out the year 2-0...winning in a fashion that we haven't seen since their magical 2003 season. This was a Carolina team went ahead to lose so many times in 06, then had a comical offense for most of last year. For them to come together as a team following an event that very easily could have torn this team apart before the season ever started makes me proud to be a Panthers fan, more so than usual. This is a character football team full of character guys, so while the ESPN's of the world are kissing Dallas' behind at the moment, these Cardiac Cats are flying right under the radar...if the Bears had won this game, we'd never hear the end of it.

Back to the game, it wasn't pretty, but a win is a win is a win in the National Football League, so I'll take them anyway we can get them. I stand by my statement last week...Jake Delhomme is a badass and proved it by taking a vicious (and late) hit from LB Lance Briggs, only to pop right back up and pound his chest as if to say "hit me harder". It's that grit, heart, leadership and energy that has been missing from this football team. Yeah, the Panthers looked ugly in the 1st half, trailing by as much as 17-3, but this team never gave up. Last year, under David Carr or Vinny Testaverde, the Panthers fold their tents and get rocked the rest of the game. It was GREAT to see Jonathan Stewart's arrival, carrying the ball 14 times for 76 yards and a pair of TD's in the 2nd half, taking over for DeAngelo Williams. Jake had an off game statistically, but he made the throws when we needed them which is what Jake is all about. He won't win you any fantasy championships, but there are few quarterbacks who are better at putting his team on his back late in games.

Now, we are 2-0, and guess who's back next week? You got it, Pro Bowl WR Steve Smith, the team's most talented offensive player. With Smith back, the sky is the limit for this team. They've proven that they can beat quality teams (don't forget that Chicago owned Indy last week) shorthanded. Now, with the offense back at full strength, I feel very bad for the Minnesota DB's next week. Smith will be back...with a vengeance. Can't wait till next week! Go Panthers!

After Huge Opening Day Wins, Panthers and Bears Face-off in Week 2

Let me get this out of my system early...Jake Delhomme is a badass.

Okay, now onto this week's game. The Panthers will face the dreaded home opener as the 1-0 Chicago Bears come into town. Why is it such a bad thing that the Panthers are playing in their home opener, you ask. Let me tell you: all time the Panthers are an embarrasing 3-10 in home openers since their existence. 3 wins...in 13 home openers. In fact, the Panthers haven't won their home opener since their 2003 Super Bowl year. Crazy. But, with everybody traveling down memory lane to that year following Carolina's ridiculous 26-24 last second (literally) win over heavily favored San Diego (w/out the services of Steve Smith), maybe the Panthers can rekindle some of that magic at home this week?

The Panthers will get a stern test for a Chicago team that owned the Colts last week as the Colts opened up Lucas Oil Stadium. The Bears did whatever they wanted offensively and defensively pretty much the entire game last week. The defense looks to be rejuvinated following a very disappointing year last year. Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs will challenge a Carolina running game with gained 142 yards against San Diego last week. Luckily for the Panthers, however, is the presense of K Rhys Lloyd, who boots kicks deep into the endzone with regularity, effectively eliminating the dangerous and exciting Devin Hester. It will come down to if the Panthers can stop Matt Forte and the Chicago offense.

Offensively, the Panthers will be looking for more magic from sorely missed and aforementioned badass Jake Delhomme. Delhomme completed 21 passes last week for 247 yards and unforgetable TD throw to TE Dante Rosario, who despite a foot injury, should play a big role in Carolina's offense. If the Panthers can run with the effectiveness they did last week with DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart, they should be tough to stop once again. But, Carolina needs to figure out a way to score once they get inside the red zone, especially playing a tough defense in Chicago where those chances could be limited.

How do I see it? I have to admit I'm nervous about the Bears. I thought they would be a 5-7 win team this year but following last week's ownage of the Colts, and Carolina's dismal showings at home the past 2 seasons, I'm worried. But, we've got Jake Delhomme and a running game once again. I like the Panthers to win by 4 in a close, hard fought game.

Cardiac Cats: The Sequel?

What an unbelievable win today. Going into San Diego against the darlings of the NFL this year, a Charger team that many have picked to go to the Super Bowl, and beating them at their place. Oh, yeah, and Carolina did it without their best offensive player in Steve Smith. It's wasn't always pretty (Carolina's Red Zone offense was awful today), but a win's a win in the NFL.

One of the things that I hate, and love, about this team is that they always make a game out of it...even when they are controlling the game. Up 19-10, San Diego all too easily drove it down Carolina's throats to make it 19-17. Then, WR DJ Hackett coughs it up, giving it right back to the Chargers who scored another TD, putting them up 24-19. Thoughts of "here goes 2006 all over again" were ringing in my head. But, Jake Delhomme quickly dispelled any ill thought for the Panthers that I might have had. Driving it right down the field and ending it with a dramatic "thread the needle" throw to TE Dante "Who the heck are you" Rosario, who led the Panthers today with 95 yards, for a 26-24 win.

Now, before getting overly zealous about this 1 win, no matter how incredible, it's important to note that the Panthers should have blown out the Chargers...the Panthers simply controlled the game for about 80% of the game before allowing San Diego to get back into it. I don't know, maybe this team just thrives with their backs against the wall, which can be exciting but it's also frustrating that this game had to end so dramatically when the Panthers should have won big. But, like I said, a win is a win and I haven't been this pumped about the Panthers is over 3 years. Bring on the Bears!

Steve Smith: What A Letdown

As many Carolina fans already know, superstar stud WR Steve Smith has been suspended for the 1st two games of the 2008 season: which opens @ San Diego and a home game vs. the Chicago Bears. The suspension comes after "Smitty" sucker punched teammate Ken Lucas on the sidelines, after drills were over, breaking Ken Lucas' nose, which will put him out for a while in Training Camp. It could have been much worse. Smith could have broken an eye socket, jaw, severly damaged Lucas' eye, or even breaking his own right hand.

This is by far the most idiotic thing that Smith could do, especially since he is fashioning himself as a team leader. This incident has far more reaching ramifications that go far beyond just Smith. Smith not only took himself out for 2 games, but he took another teammate out for an undisclosed amount of time, and put his Head Coach's job on the line. If Carolina starts out 0-2 again this year, in games that Carolina's best player could have helped them win, then you better believe that Fox and Hurney's seat will be scorching. Not only because of a slow start, but because the team went all out in the draft this year to win this year, trading away a 2009 1st Round pick.

I think it goes without saying that his hurts. Talk to anybody that knows me very well and they will tell you that Steve Smith is my hero, as far as the NFL is concerned. One of my most memorable moments in life was when I met and got Steve Smith's autograph at training camp in 2006. Now, he has severly hurt his team, his fans, and will have to once again win everybody back over...and it's going to take more than just another stellar season. Right now, I don't care about his 1,500 yard season in 2005. All I care about right now is him sucker punching not just anybody, but his own teammate.

What I find most hilarious is everybody calling for Lucas to get a suspension. Let me check: last I heard, "trash talk" isn't a punishable offense...punching someone and breaking their nose is. Sure, Lucas isn't completely innocent in this case, but he's not the one that took it to blows. I wish Lucas all the best luck in his rehab and hope that he can return in time for the regular season. For Smith, I seriously hope that he does some soul searching and realizes that he's got to grow up and not cost your team any more with your temper and attitude.

Finally, this causes this Panther fan to go "Here we go again". Ever since the 2003 season, this team has had some kind of curse. Whether it's 20 injuries in 2004, losing 4 running backs in the Playoffs in 2005, Smith and Delhomme missing games in 2006, Delhomme missing 13 games last year, now Smith missing 2 games this year. What the hell is going on?

Your 2008 Quarterback Will Be...

...Jake Delhomme. Please, ESPN, enough with your agenda that the Panthers are in desperate need for a quarterback. ESPN apparently believes that Carolina would be so desperate as to sign Brett Favre, which would kill team chemistry (this is Jake's offense), create a QB controversy that we just don't need, and bring unwanted distractions and media hype to the team. Should Delhomme go down again this year, we don't have David F'ing Carr nor Vinny the Dinosaur to screw things up for us. Matt Moore, another undrafted QB (go figure) proved that he can at least give the Panthers a functioning offense (see his performances against Seattle and Dallas last season) and we just don't need to waste our time and money on a guy who just wants to give it one more year, then hold the team ransom during the offseason with his "Do I want to play anymore?" B.S.

Saying that, however, I'm sure every Panther fan would love to see Brett Favre throwing to Steve Smith. In Madden 09 this very well could work out. But, in the real world, it's NOT going to happen and it SHOULDN'T happen. With word out of Summer workouts being that Delhomme's arm is stronger than before and that he's nearly 100% from Tommy John Surgery, there's no reason why Delhomme isn't the starter going into the 2008 campaign.

Anyway, I know it's been a while since I've written anything in this blog. The long, slow NFL summer, a new full time job, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Grand Theft Auto IV will do that to you. But, once training camp gets started up (only 2 weeks away!) and the Panthers start playing some preseason games, I'll be more active here with previews and the like. Stay tuned. Go Panthers!

Panthers Add Power Runner, Phyiscal Blocker in Aggressive 1st Round

In a very aggressive 1st Round of the 2008 NFL Draft, the Panthers were able to add a power runner and a physical tackle in the 1st round. Thanks to a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Panthers had 2 of the top 20 picks in this year's draft. The trade came at a cost, as the Panthers gave up their 2nd and 4th rounders this year, and their 1st rounder next year. While that seems like a high cost, the Panthers really only gave up 2 picks, as they just took their 1st rounder from next year this year. In a make or break year, John Fox and Marty Hurney made it clear that they are not worried about next year...because if the Panthers fail to make the playoffs for 3 straight years after an NFC Championship appearance in 2005, there may not be a next year. You gotta love the aggressiveness of these two guys. Gutsy, yes, but if the Panthers make a deep run that 1st rounder next year will be in the low 20's. But, if Carolina has another down year, they could be missing out on a top pick in next year's draft.

With their 2 1st rounders, the Panthers added RB Jonathan Stewart from Oregon. Stewart, a physical runner in the line of Stephen Davis, will go from wearing the ugliest uniform in College Football to wearing the best looking jersey in the NFL. The only real concern with him is his turf toe injury, but he says that his surgery went really well and that he'll be ready for training camp this year. With the 19th pick, the Panthers picked up RT Jeff Otah, a big, hulking, physical blocker from Pitt. It's clear that the Panthers are abandoning their finesse running game that failed in 2007, and with this draft pick and the signings/releasings along the offensive line this off-season show that the Panthers are looking to be to 2003 Panthers who were known for their power running attack. The Panthers may just have something that resembles an offense this year, which is great. Carolina, after Jake Delhomme's injury, had one the most boring, ineffective offenses in football. Now, with a rebuilt offensive line, a power runner, and WRs DJ Hackett and Muhsin Muhammad signed in F/A, could we see "Cardiac Cats II" in 2008? It's hard not to get too overly excited, as Stewart and Otah have yet to take snaps in the NFL, but it's very encouraging nonetheless.

EDIT: The Panthers had a great 3rd round of the draft. They got an absolute steal with LB Dan Connor falling into their laps in that round. CB/S Charles Godfrey was another steal, as he is 2nd round talent, and will likely start for the Panthers at FS. TE Gary Barnidge was picked up in the 5th Round, and he has already gotten comparisons to Jay Novachek (ala Mel Kiper, Jr.). All in all, an excellent draft for Carolina.

Panthers Lose Another Family Member Today...

Carolina Panthers DE Mike Rucker called it quits today, saying, "I'm done" at his press conference. Rucker who, along with former teammate Mike Minter (another favorite of mine), is a devout Christian and owner of a Christian daycare, was a beloved Panther to me. He didn't always put up the best numbers, though he is number 2 in team history in both sacks and tackles, but you could tell that he laid it out on the line each and every snap of every game. A long time Panther of 9 years, pretty much since I started following the team, Rucker has been there. It's going to be weird not having #93 line up opposite Julius Peppers anymore.

It was clear that Rucker was not going to be a Panther next year, as the Panthers didn't offer him a new contract this offseason, but Rucker was going to try and play elsewhere, but has now decided otherwise to retire. Maybe it was because nobody was going to sign him. Or, maybe it was because he couldn't see himself playing in another uniform other than the only one he knew. Regardless, Rucker will always be remembered by me as a leader for this franchise. I know that he will be sorely missed inside the Panther locker room this year. Thanks for 9 great seasons, Mike.

D.J. Hackett, Welcome to Carolina!

Marty Hurney's journey into finding a compliment to Steve Smith continued earlier this week when former Seattle WR D.J. Hackett was signed to a 2 year, $3.5M deal. Hackett will likely be the number 2 WR for Carolina next year, but will battle Muhsin Muhammad and Dwayne "DWI" Jarrett in training camp. This signing is kind of a gamble. Though Hackett is young (26) and talented (he finished off 2007 on fire), he's been plagued by injuries in his short career. If he can remain healthy (and if Jake is back healthy) the Panthers will finally have an effective air attack to compliment their running game. 3 WR sets with Muhammad and Hackett on the outside, with Smith in the slot, will be highly effective, giving Smith more room to get open while teams have to worry about Hackett and Muhammad. Steve Smith can finally rejoice, he's got a complimentary guy finally who's not on the wrong side of 30.

This signing also calls into question Dwayne Jarrett's future with Carolina. Let's face it, Jarrett so far has been a huge bust. He was Carolina's 1st 2nd Round choice last year and was supposed to be the number 2 alongside Steve Smith, the big physical receiver as opposed to a smaller, quicker receiver. What did he do last year? 6 catches. No touchdowns. Got ripped by Steve Smith. Got a DWI last week. With a young Hackett in now, and likely to start at number 2, what is Jarrett's future? Only time will tell.

Panthers Add Linebacker, Running Back

The Panthers bolstered their already strong linebacking corps (Thomas Davis, Jon Beason, and Na'il Diggs) by adding a solid LB from Cincinnati, Landon Johnson. Johnson, who was one of 4 Bengals not in trouble with the law, totaled 109 tackles in 16 games for the Bengals last year (he has 394 tackles in his career). He will compete with Diggs for a starting position in training camp this year, as Davis and Beason are locked to start. Johnson is a very flexible linebacker as well, he played all 3 linebacking positions in the Bengals 4-3 Defense.

Photobucket
LaBrandon Toefield, a RB from Jacksonville, was also signed recently by the Panthers. Toefield was stuck behind Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor out in Jacksonville and only has 1 career touchdown. He's known as a bigger, more physical back that should be the ultimate compliment to Williams' speed and agility. Toefield will likely be the team's short yardage back and goal line back.

These two signings look like they will help the team. We should be set at linebacker, and could have one of the very best linebacking corps in the entire NFL with Landon. However, the Panthers would probably do wise to draft a RB in the middle rounds in this year's draft. While Toefield adds depth and is the power runner that the Panthers were looking for, we just don't know enough about him as he's played a whole lot in Jacksonville. All in all, good signings. Now to shore up our offensive and defensive lines in the draft.

"Nut Shot" Brayton Coming to Carolina

Tyler Brayton, a former Oakland DE, signed a 2 year deal with the Panthers today. Brayton, who has good size at 6'6" 280 lbs, is probably more known for his cheap shot on a Seattle TE in 2006 than for his play on the field. In 47 career starts, he's tallied a grand total of 6 sacks.

Time will tell if a change of scenery will help him reach his full potential. He'll compete for a starting job opposite Julius Peppers, which almost certainly means that long time Panther Mike Rucker will not be returning to the team. The Panthers are also interested in veteran LT Barry Sims, also from Oakland. Rumor has it that they should have a deal in place within the next couple of days. Finally, Carolina has been talking to DT Ian Scott, formely with the Philadelphia Eagles. Looks like the Panthers are starting to heat up what has been a somewhat slow free agency period so far.

Interesting Article on the Panthers Salary Cap Figure

According to an article over at SI.com, the Carolina Panthers are actually not in that bad a shape salary cap wise. Because GM Marty Hurney, but adding incentives to contracts that are never met, has manipulated the Panthers' salary cap figure by around $9M. So, the Panthers are essentially operating under a $125M salary cap, instead of the official $116M. The notion that Carolina didn't have any money this off-season seems to be huge overstatement.

The unfortunate thing for the Panthers is that this has been one of the weaker free agent markets in recent memory, with most of the top-tier free agents getting franchise tags from their respective teams. But, there are bound to be more cuts (like RB Warrick Dunn) coming, so it's not totally hopeless for the Panthers. Speaking of which, Carolina signed G Keydrick Vincent to a 2 year deal. The Panthers are also reportedly close to a deal with former Eagles DT Ian Scott. The Panthers are also interested in former Falcons DT Rod Coleman. It's been pretty slow for Carolina as far as signing free agents, but be patient Panther fans, while San Francisco is overpaying for Justin Smith, the Panthers are waiting for the right guys at the right price to sign.

Expect to see lots more of this in 2008...

Muhsin Muhammad (87) and Steve Smith (89) celebrate. Moose because he's back in Carolina blue, Smitty because he can say bye-bye to double and triple teams every passing down.

Off Topic, Metal Gear Solid 4 is Going to be Epic...

Even though I will try and keep this blog strictly about Carolina, there will be other things that I talk about on here.

For example, Metal Gear Solid 4 releases for the PS3 on June 12 of this year. MGS, being my favorite game series and the main reason for my buying a PS3, is coming to an end with this installment. Snake's rapid aging puts him around 70 in this game, so there is no way that he survives (in fact, in one trailer, Snake holds a pistol to his mouth...). We all experienced the greatness of MGS, suffered through and somehow enjoyed the convuluted wackiness of MGS2, and experienced greatness once again with MGS3. We've come a long way since 1998.

All of the mysteries and questions raised throughout the series will be answered. We'll know the ultimate fates of series favorites Meryl, Otacon, Naomi, Col. Campbell, Raiden (who looks totally bad*** as a cyborg this time around), and of course, our friend Solid Snake. New Characters such as Drebin and Sunny. The Beauty and the Beast Squad. The whole PMC's "war that supports the global economy" bleek future as Kojima sees it. Raiden's showdown with Vamp. Solid Snake's final showdown with Liquid Snake (who is in possession of Revolver Ocelot's body through his right arm...don't ask...) And that's not even mentioning the outstanding graphics, new gameplay elements, outstanding Voice Over cast, and the return of Harry Gregson-Williams to give us another memorable soundtrack. There is simply no way that Kojima could screw up something so epic.

We've only got this long to wait...

Kris Jenkins to Jets?

The Panthers tried it last year and weren't successful. However, this year the Panthers have a suitor for the contraversial, former all-world DT Kris Jenkins...the J-E-T-S JETS, JETS, JETS! According to PFT.com, who was quoting a guy on NFLN, the New York Jets are making a push at Carolina for Jenkins.

As Carolina continues to clean house this offseason, the "Cardiac Cats" are now all but gone. We already lost Stephen Davis, DeShaun Foster, Mike Minter, Brentson Buckner, Ricky Proehl, and now Jenkins is likely gone this offseason. I remember when Jenkins was a straight up beast in 2003, he was so good that year that many considered him the best DT in all the NFL. Always controversial with his wieght issues, he added to his resume by ripping his teammates following a 20-7 loss at home to Tampa Bay last season. It's clear that the marriage is over and one way or another Jenkins has likely played the last of his football in Carolina. I don't really know how I feel about Jenkins anymore. He hasn't had nearly the year he had in 2003 (thanks in large part to injuries in 2004 and 2005). But, I think he crossed the line by ripping his teammates last year. A lot of Panther fans would disagree with that, but that's something that you tell your teammates straight up, behind closed doors. You don't call out your team through the media. That's a sign of someone who wants out. Could he get his wish this weekend/earl next week?

The Moose is Back...

According to profootballtalk.com, the Carolina Panthers and WR Muhsin Muhammad are reportedly close to a deal that will pay the 35 year old wideout $1.5 Million a year. If this turns out to be true, the Panthers will at least have a viable number 2 reciever next year. Even though his numbers were way down last year in Chicago, they had QB issues all year long, much like Carolina. With a (hopefully) healthy Delhomme next year, a reliable number 2, DeAngelo's emergenance as the primary back, and the always dangerous Steve Smith, the Panthers could be a playoff team again next year. Granted, we were all saying these things 2 years ago when Keyshawn signed here. Only time will tell if this signing yields the Panthers a playoff spot. In any event, glad to have you back Moose.

Muhsin Muhammad Back to Carolina?

Muhsin Muhammad, a long time Panther from 1996-2004, was released by the Chicago Bears this week, making Muhammad an unrestricted free agent. Growing up, I loved Muhsin Muhammad. He was Carolina's Steve Smith before Steve Smith. I remember back in the late 90's, he was one of the only WR to lead the NFC in receptions 2 years in a row. And, what Panther fan could forget his remarkable 2004 year (93 catches, 1,405 yards, unreal 16 touchdowns) . With 16+ guys on DL that year, Muhammad was one of the bright spots and nearly led the Panthers to the playoffs after a 1-7 start. Not only was Muhammad great at catching the football, but he was also a dominant run blocker. It's funny, but Keyshawn Johnson was brought in to fill the void that Muhammad left. Now, the Panthers can regain Muhammad via FA.

With Muhammad avaible, it would be interesting to see if the Panthers pursue him at all. He's getting up there in age, 35, but so was Keyshawn when he played here in 2006 and he had a productive year. However, I doubt that Carolina will go after him. The Panthers really need to solidfy the number 2 reciever spot, and there are younger options out there (see Bryant Johnson, Arizona WR likely to be a F/A). The Panthers will also push for TE Alge Crumpler this off-season.

But, how much fun would it be to have old #87 back (although, a number change would be needed as Jeff King has #87. How ironic would it be if Muhammad choose #19?) in Carolina blue. The only viable scenario to bring Muhammad back would be if the Panthers are really serious about Dwayne "go watch some film" Jarrett being the future number 2 to go alongside Smith. Bring in Muhammad, have him start at the number 2 next year while mentoring Jarrett. I really wish that the Panthers would have kept Keyshawn Johnson, because he wanted that role. Remember how excited Johnson looked on ESPN when Jarrett was drafted? Cutting Johnson last year was a bonehead move, in my opinion.

So, will Muhammad be a Panther next year? Unlikely. But, it would be fitting for him to come back to Carolina to break the 10,000 yard mark.

F/A Wishlist: Alge Crumpler, TE

NFL teams around the league and starting to make their cuts, or "salary cap casualties". We've already seen it in Carolina with Dan Morgan and Mike Wahle gone (and, now the Panthers are trying to move Foster and his $4.75 million cap figure). The Atlanta Falcons are one such team that has been cutting players left and right, with the recent one being Alge Crumpler, a big time TE who has 316 receptions that have been good for 4,212 yards and 35 TD in his 7 seasons at Atlanta.

Alge Crumpler would be a big get for Carolina. Jeff Davidson, 2nd year OC, has been talking about getting the TE more involved in the offense. Having a TE who led the Falcons in receiving 3 times in 7 years would be huge. Crumpler can stretch the field, go over the middle, and is a huge mismatch for any safety in the redzone. This would really open things up for one Steve Smith, who has been quietly begging for some help. Crumpler would give the Panthers another threat besides Steve Smith, one that Safeties and Linebackers would have to respect.

And, it doesn't hurt that when Crumpler was a rookie he said it would be a dream come true to play for the Panthers. Crumpler is a Greenville, NC native, went to North Carolina in college, and I'm guessing would still love to come back. If the Panthers can get Crumpler for the right price, it only makes sense. Get it done, Hurney!

Panthers Release Dan Morgan

Dan Morgan, one of my favorite Panthers since his rookie year in 2001, was cut by the Carolina Panthers this week. When thinking about Dan Morgan, unfortunately all many will remember about his time in Carolina will be his injuries. He's been sidelined with everything from broken legs, to concussions, to shoulders, to the most recent achilles tendon that ended his season last year. Many Carolina fans blame the GM for letting go the highly talented Will Witherspoon in 2005 in favor of Dan Morgan. Hey, hindsight is always 20/20. Witherspoon was a talent, but if Morgan were healthy, he'd have been one of the very best defensive players in the NFL.

Unfortnately, though, I find myself applauding the release. Morgan is just too much of a risk to get hurt again and the Panthers could certainly use that cap room to focus on other needs, such as WR, DL, and OL. And, that's not even mentioning the surprising emergance of rookie Jon Beason and his 140 tackles as he took over the MLB spot when Morgan went down.

In the end, I will continue to root for Dan Morgan and hope that he can go somewhere (outside of the NFC South!) and contribute to a team without getting injured again. He was a class act at Carolina who stepped up in big games (in the 2003 NFCCG and SB38, he had a combined 43 tackles), it's just too bad that he couldn't avoid the injury bug. Good luck, Dan.

Super Bowl Memories

Wow, what an f'ing game last night! Despite the lack of scoring (it was 7-3 going into the 4th quarter), this was seriously one of the three most exciting Super Bowls that I have witnessed in my days as an NFL fan. The other two being the "stopped one yard short" Super Bowl XXXIV, and, sadly, Super Bowl XXXVIII...the year my boys represented the NFC and lost by 3 to the Patriots. Big props to David "how did the ball not touch the ground" Tyree, Plaxico Burress, that Giants front four, and Eli Manning. Ballsy performances all around. Here's to possibly the greatest upset in Super Bowl history.

Getting back to Super Bowl XXXVIII, that is my own personal favorite big game. Sure, the Panthers ended up losing the game. But, like the Giants last night, the Panthers were not intimdated by the Patriots and put up one of the more ballsy performances in Super Bowl history. Jake Delhomme gave one of the very best performances by a QB in the Super Bowl (his records for longest touchdown pass and most passing yards in the 4th quarter still stand). Muhsin Muhammad breaking free from out of nowhere to reel in an 85 yard touchdown reception. Steve Smith burning Tyrone Poole. Deshaun Foster's unbelieveable 33 yard run. Delhomme talking trash to Rodney Harrison. Ricky Proehl breaking free to tie the game 29-29. So many great things that the Panthers did....yet came up 3 points short. If only our defense would have gotten one or two more stops...

In all honesty, when Muhammad scored that touchdown to put Carolina up 22-21, I thought it was over. It was how the Panthers played the entire season. Then, Ricky Proehl's touchdown that tied it 29-29, I was thinking "Okay, we've won how many overtime games this year, we're going to win this one." Then, John Kasay kicks the kickoff out of bounds to give the Patriots unreal field position. This was one Super Bowl where my emotions were so up and down. I just hope that if the Panthers ever make it back to the big game, they can give us another exciting game...yet win it this time.

Chad Johnson to Carolina?

Chad Johnson made a plea to Mr. (John) Fox to "come and get me" and that "85 plus 89 equals SuperBowl". Here's the link: http://www.wfnz.com/topic/play_window.php?audioType=Episode&audioId=1381105. Now, this is pure fantasy on Carolina fan's part and probably on Chad Johnson's part as well. But, let's speculate about this for a moment. Having two of the top 5 wideouts in the NFL on the same team, how would NFC teams stop them? With the emerging DeAngelo Williams set to have a monster year when he takes over the reigns from Foster next year, Carolina would have one of the deadliest offenses in the NFC, if not the NFL.

Chad Johnson is obviously not happy anymore in Cincinnati, and the Bengals need to fix their inept defense. Throw the Bengals a couple of draft picks and maybe Chris Gamble or Ken Lucas in the deal (Richard Marshall outplayed both at the end of last year), and both teams benefit. I doubt that the Panthers could get a Superstar like Chad Johnson in this year's draft. In a make or break year for John Fox and Marty Hurney, this could be the type of blockbuster deal that they may need. Now, a lot would have to go Carolina's way if this deal were to happen. First, Johnson is under contract with the Bengals through 2011, so the Panthers would have to take that on their salary cap, which they are already hurting in that area. Granted, they will be able to make some cap room with restructuring contracts, cuts (*cough*David Carr*cough*), and Julius Peppers not meeting his contract incentives this year. Also, the Panthers already traded away their 5th round pick to Chicago in an absolute steal for stud SS Chris Harris. If the Panthers were to deal away 1 or 2 more draft picks, it would be a very quiet draft and other areas such as Defensive Line and Offensive Line, not to mention a power back that the Panthers desperately need, would not be addressed.

That being said, the Panthers would be foolish to pass up on this deal, if the Bengals were willing to listen. The Bengals have said that they will not trade Johnson, but if the right offer were made, I'm sure they would listen. It'd be risky, not only because you trade away draft picks, but also the distractions that a Chad Johnson would bring. But, having a Steve Smith/Chad Johnson tandem along with a healthy Jake Delhomme and an explosive DeAngelo Williams, and the Panthers would have a very talented offense and most surely make the playoffs if everyone remains healthy. Here's to dreaming...
